The City
Paris is the capital and most populous city of France. Paris is located in north-central France, in a northern bending arc of the Seine whose crest includes two islands, Île Saint-Louis and the larger Île de la Cité, which form the oldest part from the city. Paris has a typical Western European oceanic climate which is affected by the North Atlantic Current. The general climate throughout the year is mild and moderately humid. Paris has been one of the main European centers of finance, diplomacy, commerce, fashion, science and the arts. Central Paris contains the city’s most visited monuments, including Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Louvre as well as Sainte-Chapelle. Les Invalides, where Napoleon’s tomb is located, and the Eiffel Tower are located on the left bank to the southwest of the center. For centuries, Paris has attracted artists from around the world, who come to the city to train and seek inspiration from its vast pool of artistic resources and galleries. As a result, Paris acquired a reputation as a “City of Art”. Italian artists had a profound influence on the development of art in Paris in the 16th and 17th centuries, particularly in sculpture and reliefs. Painting and sculpture became the pride of the French monarchy, and the French royal family commissioned many Parisian artists to adorn their palaces during the era of French Baroque and Classicism.
